Our Classes            detailed class descriptions

IMPORTANT NOTICE

  • NOSA will hold its September-November 2010 classes Wednesday nights at the Winspear Centre in Sidney.
     
  • Moving our training night to Wednesday after holding classes Thursday evenings for 51 years at Sanscha Hall and the Winspear Centre is part and parcel of the club's new contract with the Memorial Park Society and the Mary Winspear Centre.
     
  • We hold our April-June classes at the RCMP barn at the Saanich Fairgrounds on Stelly's X-Road, again due to our new contract with the Memorial Park Society and the Mary Winspear Centre.
     
  • Registration opens June 10 for our Wednesday classes Sept.-Nov. at the Winspear Centre in Sidney.
     
  • Each class is 45 minutes long, with a 15-minute break between classes. 

    Not all classes described below are offered every session. Check our schedule.
     
  • You must be 12 years or older to train at our club.
     

Class Descriptions

Puppy Class                                           Registration info    Schedule
$100 fee per session
. No membership required.

  • for 3-6 month old puppies.
  • nine-week class provides socialization, basic obedience (i.e., sit, down, come on command and walking on leash), grooming and general health care.

Beginner's Class                                 Registration info    Schedule
$100 fee per session
. No membership required.

  • for dogs 6 months of age or older that have not had previous formal training, other than Puppy class.
  • nine-week class provides an introduction to the basic obedience commands (i.e., sit, down, stand & come on command; walking on leash; and sit, down and stand-stays).
  • class is designed to make your dog welcome in the community.
  • additional Novice Practice classes are often required to polish your teamwork and make your dog a well-mannered canine citizen or to ready the team for competition.

Canine Good Neighbour Class    Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session. $10 annual membership required.

  • a practical class for people who want a good pet, but are not interested in competitive obedience (i.e., trialing their dogs), or for those who want to prepare for a Canine Good Neighbour test.
  • provides control, socialization and basic obedience.
  • for cross-bred and pure-bred dogs alike that have had at least one Beginner's class (see Beginner's description above.)
  • upon completion of our CGN class, your dog should have the skills, and you should have the confidence, to enter a CGN test.
  • if your dog passes a CGN test, he will attain his CGN certificate (awarded by the Canadian Kennel Club) and is entitled to bear the letters "CGN" after its name. CGN tests are offered locally by Citizen Canine.

Novice Practice Class                     Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session
. $10 annual membership required.

  • for dogs that have completed a Beginner's class.
  • reinforces the basic Novice exercises, as defined by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) and as learned in Beginner's.

Advanced Practice Class              Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session
. $10 annual membership
required.

  • for dogs that can do all the Novice exercises (Heel on & off leash, Figure Eight, Stand For Examination, Recall, and Long Sit and Long Down exercises), but who require refinement and increased precision.

Trials Practice Class                       Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session. $10 annual membership required.

  • for dogs that can do all the Novice exercises.
  • Focuses on the handler (footwork, body language, etc.), trial preparations and procedures, distraction training.

Intermediate Class                           Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session. $10 annual membership
required.

  • for dogs that have at least 1 CD (Companion Dog) leg.
  • is an introduction to Open work (i.e., heeling off leash, retrieving, jumping, drop on recall, and long sits and downs with handlers out of the room).

Open Class                                          Registration info    Schedule

required.

  • for dogs that have completed Intermediate and can do most Open exercises. They must have a reliable retrieve and dependable out-of-sight sits and downs.
  • focuses on refining those exercises that require more work.

Trials Open Class                             Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session
. $10 annual membership
required.

  • for dogs ready to trial in Open.
  • focuses on trialing, proofing, handler errors, refining and increasing precision.

Beginner’s Utility Class                  Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session. $10 annual membership required.

  • for dogs that have at least 1 CDX (Companion Dog Excellent) leg.
  • an introduction to the Utility exercises (i.e., scent articles, signals, directed jumping, glove and moving stand).

Utility Class                                   Registration info    Schedule
$80 fee per session
. $10 annual membership
required.

  • for dogs working well in Utility who are trialing or preparing to trial.
  • focuses on refinement, precision, handler errors, distraction training and trial procedures.
